Salvia, or Salvia divinorum, is an herbal mint plant and a naturally occurring hallucinogen that is native to Mexico. They do not consider it highly toxic. Salvia has a low addiction potential, and people have not reported overdoses. However, it may involve some risks, and the long-term effects are unclear. The unwanted effects of salvia include nausea, dizziness, and difficulty focusing. Salvia does not currently have any medical use, but research is underway to investigate its possible use.

The answer to whether or not salvia is physically harmful remains unclear, however using this drug can result in unpredictable and subjectively overwhelming short-term alterations in consciousness. Short-term effects of salvia include brief yet intense hallucinations, feelings of detachment from the physical body; and other changes in perception, sensation, and mood. Associated short-term effects may also include worry and panic, dizziness and loss of coordination, and decreased ability to react to people and surroundings. Short-term dangers of salvia use include the possibility of harm to oneself and others due to people experiencing a general detachment from reality and a decreased ability to interact with physical surroundings. Any definitive long-term effects specific to salvia remain largely unknown.

Salvia’s active ingredient, salvinorin A, is considered one of the most potent naturally occurring psychoactive drugs. The effects of this drug include hallucinations, dizziness, visual disturbances, and more. Some physical effects are also possible, including nausea, dizziness, possible loss of control over motor functions and coordination, and irregular heart rate. A small 2011 study found that people who use salvia, either alone or with alcohol or other drugs, were more likely to experience neurologic, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal side effects. A 2011 animal study found that salvia use may have negative effects on learning and impair long-term memories. Salvia isn’t approved for any medical use in the United States, and many states have laws that outlaw buying, possessing, or selling it.

Salvia's effects come on quickly, sometimes in less than a minute. Common short-term effects include hallucinations and changes in visual perception, uncontrolled laughter, and a sense of detachment from self and reality. Smoking any substance over a long period of time, including salvia, can lead to breathing trouble and other health problems. There is a substantial risk of injury or accidental death to salvia users.
